Peter,
The contact pressure between the rubbing surfaces is much greater with slide
valves than piston valves. With a slide valve the valve is pressed onto it's
mating surface by steam pressure. With a piston valve the contact pressure
is merely the weight of the spool piece and the contact pressure of the
rings.
