Over the past few days I have been watching some videos /films (as they 
originally were) taken in
the 1950's by Cam Camwell.
These show many scenes of yards and "photo opportunity stops", where groups 
of enthusiasts are wandering round, over tracks, etc.

You certainly would get the same freedom today.
