[modeleng] Re: Shapers

Tony, if you do get the hand one, it is not far from me and I could at least
collect it for you.
How it gets to your end of the country is another matter.
Perhaps Harrogate next year, assuming you are not in a hurry!!
Much faster, the GPO or whatever it is these days, charge under £12 if it
weighs under 40 lbs.

As for operting them by hand, it is tedious rather than hard work.
There are articles in Model Engineers about motorising them, and that is
another option.

They look both good Alan! I suspect that the powered one is three phase
though - I can guarantee it if I go after it, due to me not having a
converter! The hand powered one might therefore be a beter proposition for
such as me. The only problem then would be factoring in the cost of the 500+
mile round journey to collect it! Whilst this sort of distance is only an
afternoon's jaunt for such as Tel, it is all extra cost. What we could do
with is some sort of staging post scheme, whereby stuff such as this can be
transported all over the country from list member to list member .... <VBG>.

Incidentally, for we poor folks with bad backs, how hard is it to operate
one of these manual shapers? I once saw a Fred Dibner programme on TV, where
he was drilling out a new boiler plate for one of his steam engines - with a
hand powered ratchet pillar drill. He called it "blooming hard work", or at
least words to that effect!
