Alan,
Yes, I worry about this business. I have an estate car and I fit a board
down one side with a piece of track screwed to it. The loco is rolled in
from a wheeled trolley. The buffers at the front are captured by a shrouded
buffer stop and the buffers at the rear are captured by a removable clamping
device. In my previous car this little lot was located behind me, the
driver, poised to do serious bodily harm in the event of a sudden stop! At
least I have seen fit to arrange the board to be on the passengers side in
my current car and it is not possible to carry a passenger in the front seat
as it is wound fully forward.
With the sort of weights we are dealing with and the difficulty of attaching
the loco to the car I think we have to accept that, in the event of a
serious collision it is likely that some damage will be caused by/to the
loco in the event of a serious collision.
Incidentally it has only recently occured to me that one of the problems
with this board set up is the difficulty of removing the spare wheel
(located under the floor, under the board) in the event of a puncture. I
certainly couldn't do it single handedly and I'm not sure what the reaction
of the "friendly" A.A. man would be when asked to lift 400lbs worth of board
plus loco!
