[modeleng] Re: Securing models

All,

I have 7.25" locos, 1/4 ton or so each, so have a big interest in this .
. . .

I use a similar system to Peter, the rails are used to get the loco in
and out, but then lift the loco slightly (and put on wooden blocks), as well
as using turnbuckles. Front and back are then wedged with wood against seat
frames or something solid. This means that even if the turnbuckle loosens,
it can't move anywhere. It takes a long time to get in and out, but I don't
fancy something that big coming forward to meet me.

We all deliver our locos to IDSME on running days which means lots of car
transport.

I have a board much bigger than the loco with a rail on it. I roll the loco
onto the rail (an estate car so easy) and then secure the loco with
turnbuckles front and back. I then also secure the lot with straps located
at either side of the boot. Blankets on top of the loco prevent chaffing.

The movement of locos in cars is really dangerous. Just as importantly the
damage from even a minor movement can be serious. The key is over secure
rather than take risks.

You can never be too careful.

I had a call from a friend yesterday.

Apparently he was driving to his club, with loco in the back of his estate
car, when he had a minor accident.
Or rather, it would have been minor apart from the engine.

Being unsecured, some 150lbs of steel and copper kept going when the car
stopped, almost demolishing the passenger seat, (fortunately empty) then
fell over, breaking his wrist, and doing other assorted harm to the car.

Luckily he is not otherwise injured, but the car is worse than from the
actual accident, he has doubts that the insurance will cover that extra
damage, and his loco is "a real mess" (his words).

How does everyone secure their engines in the back of vehicles, or if you
dont, perhaps it might be worth considering.
