A good idea.

Seeing it done is worth far more than all the words on here.
Then comes the interesting part: trying it for yourself.

In fact, that is the best way to learn. Take a nice piece of scrap, around 
1/2" diameter, then turn down and thread to chosen size. Make sure you have 
a nut of that thread, and you will soon see when the thread is the correct 
size for the nut to fit.
