It is possible to so mount the threading tool whereby
the cut can be made FROM the shoulder TOWARD the
Tailstock, eliminating the possibility of a crash.

Sure Al,
You can do that by inverting the tool and running the lathe in reverse, but
it is much more fun to thread towards the chuck at 500 to 750 RPM, depending
on the thread pitch as this keeps your reflexes toned up ! With screw on
lathe chucks, running in reverse is asking for trouble. The slowest I have
ever threaded is 25 RPM and the highest was 1,120 RPM on some very fine
threads. The 25 RPM was used to cut metric threads on an Imperial geared
lathe. I always leave a small groove at the end of all threads in case I am
a wee bit slow in raising up the half nut lever. (At high speeds, one must
not blink one's eyes.)
I once had to cut a short section of 3/4 pitch thread and to do that, I had
to use a chain and sprocket drive to the lead screw. Never could find a
point where I could use the thread dial and it match up so I had to stop the
lathe and reverse it to back the carriage up for each pass. Slow, but it
worked for both the screw and nut.
Jesse in cold West Tennessee where a tiny amount of almost invisible snow
fell yesterday. We maybe had a thimbleful had I been able to sweep it up on
the deck so I could measure it!
