[modeleng] Screwcutting

Hi Eric

Screwcutting sounds a black art - but once you have done it, it is not
difficult. For most of my threads, I use a die held in the tailstock, but
for really accurate threads, I screwcut them.
As I mentioned the Hardinge makes screwcutting very easy, but any lathe
equipped with changewheels will do! If the thread I have screwcut is of
normal pitch, I run a die over it as a final cut, as this ensures that the
profile of the thread is accurate. Try it sometime on a bit of scrap, and
you will find it a rewarding exercise!

Thanks for your comlimentary comments about my little lathe. It is now
useable as a plain lathe, which is quite a joy when big brother is involved
with another job. It has a dinky little 60mm 3-jaw chuck from Arc Euro (a
real one with a chuck key!) a 4-jaw, faceplate and ER 25 collets.

A lot of work still to do - screwcutting kit etc etc, but this will be done
in due course. It has been a satisfying project for an old chap, as it
breaks down into sub-assemblies, so it is not as daunting as contemplating
making the whole lathe (if you see what I mean!).

Cheers! Hubert
