[modeleng] Re: Scrap metal prices

Eric,

Nope, the brass castings I have in the barrel are already 30 years old and
look pretty much the same as when I bought the flawed messes. They are for
the most part, knife handle pommels and guards for Bowie type knife blades.
Biggest part of them are what is known as SAE 40 which is what is used for
water faucet and globe valves. Their copper content is pretty high and that
gives them a reddish colour. One of these days I will be firing up my
little foundry furnace and will melt some of it into train parts.

If that bloke Barak Hussein Obama gets in office, I may have to start
casting gun barrels since he does not think we citizens need our own
firearms for protection when some thief starts trying to knock our doors
down to steal Tellys etc. Heck, I may just cast them into knife handle
parts until he outlaws them also.

15 years ago, a small factory moved out of a nearby town and I was fortunate
that I got 120 pounds of 1/2" round free machining brass from the scrappie.
At that time brass was 60 cents a pound on the scrap market. Of course the
local scrappie only paid 32 cents and charged me what he could get (60
cents) on the main market for scrap. I still have quite a few short pieces
,6" or so, of the free machining stuff. I throw none of it away, but when a
piece gets too small to handle in the lathe, it goes into a special scrap
box awaiting my foundry.

Jesse in Troy, TN where everything is still green more or less.

I guess we have missed the top of the market. I've got 3 engines finished,
but the castings, boilers & other materials were bought when prices were
much easier. Do I wait 3-5 years for things to pick up ? Your scrap brass
 will not deteriorate Jesse.
