Twas the GWR but they wouldn't let him develop the locos into what were the
finest the world has seen when the LMS let him loose. The GWR already had a
class 5, why would they want another, even if it was better!
With the SVR, I have fired and driven every loco we have, there are fors and
againsts for them all. Try going tender first on a western loco in a
blizzard or a storm, there is nowhere to go to get out of the weather.
Preparing the loco in the morning, all the bits on the Western engines
require at least half an hour to oil up "in between". There was a quote
about either a castle or a king that "If it was ever sunk, there are that
many corks inbetween, it would float"!! Mr Bramble remembers where the quote
came from and who said it. Oiling up Southern Pacifics is a bind as well,
they take a lot of oil in the boxes. LMS doesn't get away, Leander was a
swine, you need arms extensions to reach the middle crosshead as was tha
Great Marquess, a stinker to dispose the ashpans. Pros and Cons for them all
but if I had a choice of the engine I prefer, it has to be a Black Five and
that's over a Princess. As for the Flying Haggis, what a pile of scrap!
Does that answer your question John?
Steam is steam at the end of the day and I love it all from traction engines
to stationary angines but as our little song on the Valley says, "A Black
Five for Me".
Dave.
