Hello Roger,

To be honest I usually use commercial rivets so at least one end looks O.K.
(the other end is usually hidden so I simply countersink the hole and bash
the rivet into the countersink.
The proportions of the rivet depend on the shape of head you chose but a
typical head is x rivet dia.  The length of shank that is to be deformed is
usually about 1.5 x rivet diameter regardless of material.
A few trial rivets are usually all that is necessary to get a Pukka job.
