Hi All,
I was going to do a bit of machining yesterday to make a small steel shaft.
As I use some tools with replacable three sided cutting tips and the tip was a
bit tired, I fitted a new brand new tip.
As soon as I started machining it was obvious that something was wrong, the tip
was not cutting, it was chewing the metal off. As it was a new tip which I
assumed to be OK, I then checked the whole set up and in the end concluded
that it must be a duff piece of steel and perhaps it had a bit of a hard skin.
After another couple of cuts and things hadn't improved, getting desperate I
then took the tool out and checked the tip. I found that the underside of the
actual cutting tip had sheared off. Having now found the problem I turned the
tip to a new cutting position. On recommencement of turning I was amazed when
after only about travelling along the shaft about 1" this tip also sheared off
exactly the same.

Now the box of tips that I was using were purchased at the Harrogate show from
a tool stand that were selling 12 tool tips in Sandvik boxes, cheap.
After the second broken tip, I put onto the tool a tip that I know is a real
Sandvik and everything was perfect.

So now the moral of this story is beware of Show Bargains as the actual tips in
the box judging from the first ones perfomance are definitely not Sandvik.
