About the only way to soften HSS is to heat it red hot and bury it in ashes
so it cools very slowly. That is the way the blacksmith at the GM&O RR
showed me and it does work.
Unka Jesse, the redneck
I have brazed HSS bits onto mild steel shanks, without any trouble. The
heating did not appear to affect the hardeness of the tool bit.
Cheers!
