Firstly, thank you everyone who took the trouble to reply to my query on piston
rings on my proposed wooden model of a steam engine, which I forgot to do at
the time ..... <blush> Since then, thanks to a link from Tel, I have purchased
a set of plans for a wooden double acting oscillator from Bill Reichart's
widow, who is continuing to sell all of his engine plans. Of possible interest
to the group is that whilst it is designed to run solely on compressed air,
there aren't any sealing rings at all on the (wooden of course) piston.
According to Bill's original notes, he found that it still ran quite
satisfactorily however, though with wood's natural movement as the ambient air
humidity changes, I will have to wait and see if this is correct. I shall be
changing the plans very slightly, to give a bore the same diameter as the
closest O-ring diameter however, just in case I have to fit one retrospectively.
Thanks again,
TonyW.
