There's one significant difference right there. The little jiggly bit acted as an ink regulator, to both limit and encourage flow, and was always the principle cause of problems with technical pens. Things went well as long as your ink was clean and the jiggly bit was still to be heard, but as soon as that stopped jiggling you knew there was trouble ahead.
