Glad to see you back in the land of the living Jesse!
Like many others here though, I used to work in a drawing office too, and
still prepare the occasional plan or three, and was always told that the
wire was for clearing the otherwise inevitable blockages caused by the ink
drying in the tube. Rotring drafting pens, although looking different with
their enclosed "shaken not stirred" nib design still need that cleaning wire
to keep the ink flowing - unfortunately as it was usually the first thing to
die on them!
