[modeleng] Re: Piloted "D" Bits?

Hello Al.,

I did this very job a few years ago and was surprised how easy it was.

I took a piece of silver steel (drill rod to you?) and turned it down to the
O.D. of the spotface. Then I drilled it to the diameter of the pilot before
removing it from the lathe. With a small file I carefully filed a number of
teeth on the annular end of the rod - it's not too difficult, you don't need
to get them evenly spaced just be careful to get them all the same height.
Now harden and temper in the usual way to straw colour. Finally turn a piece
of silver steel to fit in the hole and act as the pilot. This can be
loctited
in place using a 600 series Loctite.
There you have it. I used it to spotface some castings and was pleasantly
surprised how it survived the task. Just don't let it get too hot.

Good Luck,

Barrie
