When we last left our boy he was contemplating the strap hinges for the 2X Tich
smokebox, and the contemplation of strap hinges continues, but actual work
moves along on the entire saddle and smokebox assemblies. The saddle/stand
assembly needs a bit of brazed filleting to complete the built-up "casting" and
then that's ready to machine and finish. There is more fettling than machining
as there are only three things to machine, the saddle radius, and tabs on each
which rest on top of the frame plates. The smokebox shell, the door, and the
dogs & dart are completed and I am presently on a search for steel material for
the door ring after which hinges can be fitted. Until the door ring material
is found no skip is safe.
I'll soon be doing some detailing and I wondered if anyone could point me to a
drawing of a smokebox lamp iron? I can figure out the attachment but what I'd
like to know is how the vertical prong is shaped, the typical height, taper,
etc. If you want a specific railway I suppose an LBSCR detail would do. I
have a number of resources showing locos with lamp irons (Roche, etc) but at
such small scale such details only appear as little black blips. The same is
true of handrail posts and I've got the making of a couple of dozen of those in
my future.
Regards,
Harry
