Alan,
Not sure of the real reason, it has run with painted nameplates as well as
real brass ones.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJcky_cHXG4 shows it on a recent run with the
painted nameplate on the RH smoke deflector in the first part of the clip,
followed by another section where the black background brass nameplate is
seen on the same side.
The Wikipedia article states that black was the original colour, later
changed to red.
