Andy,
I have a 7, a 40 (which was my fathers) and several 8's.
One 8 I bought new in the 60's, at vast expense, and the others have been
found at car boot sales, where they only fetch a pittance.
Although I've heard of the 9's, I've never encountered one.
As for the battery, Maplins do / did sell them, as do several other places.
Look for PX74 or BLR154 or MN154 or V74PX, which seem to be the numbers they
go by now.
Peter, I prefer them for almost everything.
You get so much more information from the way the needle moves, can "sense"
the slight quiver of AC on a DC line, etc.
Other people must feel the same as, apparently, AVO (or Megger as it now is)
still sold over 300 a year but can no longer find the skilled staff to make
them or buy in some specialised parts.
So, once again, it is not lack of demand, it is the collapse of a
traditional industry that is to blame.
Alan
