The AVO and others of its ilk -  the GEC 'Selectest' - have a big 
advantage when working on transmitters. They don't go mad with RF arouns 
them. They are also farv better when adjusting for a peak or a null. 
Digital voltmeters have  resolution: this is not the same as accuracy, 
which can be way out , although normally only as a result of overload. How 
often do you check your multimeter of either type, anyway? I got some of 
the old Ferranti precision voltage source ICs which I use every couple of 
years or so.
All too often digital readouts get equated with accuracy, and not 
resolution. That applies to mechanical items too - just because your 
digital calipers give a readout to tenths of a thou, it doesn't mean they 
are accurate!
