That certainly isn't true! There's only one substance that cannot
mechanically wear - Unobtainium.
Seriously though, several of us in the Warrington & DMES have used O rings
in steam locomotive pistons. Our conclusions are that Silicon O rings are
O.K. when used in a well polished non ferrous cylinder. When used in a cast
iron cylinder I have seen them reduced to D rings in only a few hours
running.
