As Terry knows, Drizabone is a waterproof, oilskin coat, made long, and at
back has a great folded flap, so when riding a horse, that flap covered the
saddle and what was tied on to it, namely bed-rolls, billy, and tucker.
Canterbury Planes, in South Island, thousands and thousands of acres of
river flats, a few of the present rail and road bridges are over a mile
long.
Back in the days before motor vehicles, the local Cartage Contractor, had
Bullock teams to pull the Wagons.
About two or three days to cart a load to Christchurch.
Certain Bullocky had over a hundred bales of wool on his wagon, and a "New
Boy," to help him. Tyeing the load, and tarping up, took hours.
Drizzling rain made it uncomfortable, and the New Boy had also a new
Drizabone, and being a skinny guy, had put a few river rocks in pockets,
just to give himself some weight, in pulling on the ropes.
All of a sudden Bullocky Bill came running around the back of wagon,
shouting and waiving arms about, "Slacken those last two ropes, they're too
tight." "Too tight?" said New Boy, "I put rocks ina' pockets so's I kin
geddit tight."
"Take a couple of rocks out'r'n then." said Bullocky Bill, "You're pullin'
rope too tight, you're lifting th' back wheels off'n the ground.
