A few years ago I came across info on an H K Porter locomotive with 
Hackworth gear where
the bracket holding the slide was built to move vertically with the 
journal box, thus eliminating
the problems of the journal box movement affecting the timing.  I have 
never seen any
reference to this type of design feature any where else.  Fwiw.
