Hi John (and Peter)
One thing that's always puzzled me about Hackworth gear is - how is the
"lead" provided for? I say this because there is only one eccentric and no
secondary drive from the crosshead.
With Stephenson's gear the lead is provided by rotating the eccentric
through an angle of advance, but you then need two eccentrics, one for each
direction of travel. So how can Hackworth gear get away with only one?
