Hi Tony,
Just for starters how about Chain drive? this does not need rocket science
to line up and allows for the wheels to float up and down with suspension.
Speed control should be electronic as this does not waste energy and it
could be radio controlled. There used to be several circuits around or you
could use the type used in Radio Contolled boats. A wiper motor should be
about the right power although a look around on the internet might find you
a motor with a built in right angle drive which would then enable you to
install the motor longitudinally with the drive coming out suitable for
connecting to a axle by the chain drive. Another motor could be a car Heater
motor but not a Vauxhall one as they are not reversable. Any motor used
should be a permanent magnet type.
