Harry,
I have already found out about the Customs situation.
One can register an exhibit with Customs and get the "OK", which also
exempts it from taxes (if applicable), and guarantees that it can leave the
country again. Also, it is used for evidence to the Customs in the
originating coutnry when the item(s) return to their home.
It is a procedure that is common with, for example works of art that go to
galleries or exhibitions.
As for transport, companies such as Fedex can (generally) be relied upon to
take things safely and for high value items, arrange special insurance. That
tends to ensure that they wont lose it!
There are also specialist carries who deal with the very fragile, and
valuable items.
The problems come at this end.
Someone has to be the recipient, and take responsibility for it after Fedex
or whoever, hand it over.
It then has to be transported to the exhibition, which, as you mentioned,
could be via the ME collection service.
At the end of the exhibition, it needs repacking, and taking to the carrier,
or them to be notified to collect it, and all the requisite paperwork
completed.
Plus, of course, someone has to pay for the return transport.
If the owner decides to bring a model over, he will have flight costs,
accomodation, and local transport costs.
That would obviously be more expensive, but not a great deal more as special
courier arrangements arent cheap.
I believe that ME should offer to pay something to get more international
models, and also to get the best for visitors to see. After all, it is the
models that make the exhibition.
I accept that it would have to have limits, to avoid abuse, or else one will
get someone exhibiting a poorly built ST 10v just to get whatever is
available to cut their own costs.
My feeling in this case is that, if the model is sent, ME should accept it,
and take responsibility for it from the courier, and up to the time it is
back in the latters hands, and they should also pay for the return carriage.
If the exhibitor wanted to come over, free (basic) accomodation for the
duration of the exhibition would be reasonable.
However, as I dont work for or own ME, it isnt up to me.
Alan
