Maybe you should hook up a photoelectric-activated servo to open and close the 
fire door.  Move the full shovel close -- snap, the door opens.  Pull the empty 
shovel back -- snap, the door closes.  Of course, if you are indecisive, the 
full shovel gets slapped and emptied and then the empty shovel gets knocked out 
of your hand.  On the other hand, maybe you should go to stoker firing....
