Several of the trade classes in our high shool have been eliminated and our
son is worried that machine shop will be done in next. We live in a rural
area and things like machine shop, building trades and welding are very
helpful. Several of our son's better students have gone on to work in area
machine shops and these trades are also necessary to be successful at
farming or industrial work.
Charles spoke of "money sports" so here goes. Memphis State University like
most colleges "needs" money and yet they just gave one of the athletic
coaches an advance in salary to the tune of one point three million dollars
a year ($1,300,000) !!! Now that is a lot of frog hides for helping a very
minor part of the students possibly get the chance, I think the odds are
10,000:1 against, becoming a highly paid pro basketball player. I wonder
how the professors in subjects that really matter out in the world feel
about that??
One of the machine shop students in our son's class was a star basketball
player and if he decided to not come to machine shop class many days, the
school officials "overlooked" that fact.
