Alan, Gents,
There is a great need I believe for a radical rethink of current curriculum.
Many of the kids at my school aren't interested in English lessons so are
hardly as an example going to show much enthusiasm in German or French.
They do however enjoy more practical subjects and do better in them' so I
think that traditional woodwork, metalwork, needlework and dare I say it
domestic science ought to be an option. I am all for giving everyone a
chance and a level playing field to play on but it must be realised that we
all have different talents and abilities and we can't all be brain surgeons,
neither could we all be plumbers and electricians etc.

Ian, that is quite an achievement, and shows that there is a definate need /
desire for practical engineering training (despite what our Govt thinks!).

Subject: [modeleng] ME Classes
Gents,
Thought you all might like an update on my Metalwork / Model Engineering
classes. If you all remember I started the class in the new year term, it
was sucessful with a total of ten students attending. Initially they made a
stepped block to get then used to the idea of marking out, sawing, filing to
size etc, they then had a choice to come up with their own design to
manufacture something. I had students making CD racks, Star Trek badges,
paperweights, bike spanners, bracelets, a box made from guilding metal, one
students even started making the project for his 'A' level design technology
course. Tell you chaps I was kna er I mean worn out.
The school authorities have asked me to run the course again this term,
apparently twelve students have already signed up and the course is still to
be advertised in the local paper.
This time though Im going to get them to make a can opener as an initial
thing and then give them a choice of four or five other projects to make.
The choice will include stuff like a screwdriver, a clock using a quartz
mechanism, a car safety hammer, a bracelet, or anything within reason.
If anyone has any other ideas, I'd be grateful to recieve them, the item
needs to made in about five two hour sessions by people with limited
knowledge and skill.
Regards, IDP
