Perhaps all aftermarket spigot bushes are
sintered?
I have been following the discussion on lubrication with interest and when
the subject of spigot bushes was mentioned I felt I could add the
following experience.
The 2nd car I owned was a Standard 10 Companion circa 1959, a sort of mini
estate car before anybody thought of the Mini.
While touring the lake district and after a particularly steep climb, the
gear box emitted a loud bang, however the car continued to run and no
further noises were produced so the tour was continued, the only difference
was
that the gears were a little difficult to engage.
The car continued to be used in this condition for several thousand miles
until a problem with the clutch release mechanism was encountered (a very
common fault with this model), and a repair was necessary.
On checking, the spigot bearing was totally non-existent -- sintered or
not!!
How did I get away with using the car for so long in this condition? Well,
when my father taught me to drive he insisted that I learn to
double-de-clutch and I think this always ensured that the spigot was kept in
alignment
at each gear change, and any way where did the bang come from?, all the
gears appeared to be sound, and after the bearing was replaced the box
continued to run OK.
