I was told, by a ex-Merchant Marine Steam Engineer that Steam Oil isn't a
very good lubricant for motion work, etc when used "straight from the can at
room temp". Seems it needs to be mixed with Steam as per its design
parameters.
He recommended chain-saw oil or 20/50 motor oils.

I use steam oil now as it tends to stick better than ordinary oil. The
motion on my 2½" gaugers whizzes round at a fair lick so you need
something that doesn't get flung off easily! Some people use chainsaw
oil for the same reason.

What viscosity of oil do folk prefer for lubricating the motion, axleboxes
etc of their miniature locomotives?

prefer something heavier (like a gear oil) on the grounds that it doesn't
get thrown out so easily. Any comments welcome.
