G'Day Gents,
Last night at my club meeting (Society of Model & Experimental Engineers,
Western Australia), It was discovered that one of our member's, John Street,
has been a member for the last 74 years without a break!
John joined the society at 14, I believe (if my memory is working
correctly). To me, this is simply astounding!!!
It has to be a record. This is REAL letter from the Queen, type stuff. A far
better reason than simply turning 100!!!!
The gentleman, still (!) runs his own highly sucessful toolmaking business,
complete with CNC machinery. With his present state of good health, John is
sure to be with us for a few more years yet. Amazingly, his present project
is a 3.5" gauge loco, that he admitts he will never finish. Unfortunately,
nobody else will be able to finish it to the same standard, unless they have
access to a workshop equiped like his toolmaking premises. The accuarcy to
detail is prefect. John uses EDM to produce replica castings of every item
that was originally cast, and even from the same materials as the originals.
Everyone considers me to be a perfectionist, but I pale in comparison to
John.
Our club started in (we think) 1929, but the early records are all in the
State Library, and therefore someone has to go in and look them up, to
confirm the actual date. Unfortunately our society is dying...... I think we
are down to about 8 members, with me being the youngest by about 15
years...... I'm the spring chicken at 41.
I feel our lack of membership is due to NOT having a railway track. 40
something years ago, the club split into those who wanted a miniature
railway, and thse who didn't. Some remained mambers of both clubs, while the
majority went one way or the other.
Cheers,
Phill.
