[modeleng] Re: Laser / water jet cutting

HI ALL
Have used laser cutting and yes some results have been disappointing, with
burnt edges, although the laser cut frames etc at the shows always look good
(doug Hewsons bits always look good). Have seen water jet cutting on ceramics
and aluminium, these look very good.
Have just drawn up some bits for my sweetpea cabs sides/back and firebox
closure plate, these will be going for water jet cutting, will let you know
price etc later.
I always draw these bit's with autocad as the price is always better as the
companies can simply import the details and then cut. If I'm not in a hurry
and pay cash they can fit my bits in the scrap of production jobs when they
are
using the correct material, This sometimes means I get some spares (1or2 but
sometimes 10+!!) depending on the job.

It is many years since I saw water jet cutting, and even longer since I had
anything to do with laser cutting.
In both cases, there were limits on thickness, material they would cut, etc,
and the quality seemed to vary widely with different operators.

I know that things have improved since then, but what is the latest on such
machines?
Advantages and disadvantages of each, materials, thickness, tolerance,
surface finish, etc.

Anyone have any recent experience?
