[modeleng] Re: Larger Matters - epoxy glue

Hi John

I wouldn't trust epoxy glue for anything critical. I know they stick
aircraft together with it, but my own experience of Araldite and suchlike
has been very disappointing. Let me give you an example.

With the loco I'm building, the driving wheel castings don't come with the
balance weights already cast in. You have to make them from plate and add
them yourself, by riveting them together through the gaps between the spokes
(exactly as in full size). The spokes have a machined flat on them where the
balance weight fits. I decided to stick the plates on to the spokes with
Araldite, so they would be held in the correct location while I drilled
through for the rivets. I started drilling, and promptly broke the drill
because I hadn't bargained for the drill catching on the inside of the
vee-rims which these wheels have (LMS style).

So all twelve plates had to come off again, so that I could relieve the rims
in the areas where the rivets would pass through. I thought they would be
the devil's own job to get off, but much to my surprise they popped off very
easily when prised with a wooden stick. The Araldite had bonded quite well
to the cast iron, but not very well at all to the mild steel plates despite
them being "roughed up" with emery on the inside to provide a key.

I mention this for what it's worth - others may have different tales to
tell.

Regards
Ron
