I had a Shackleton tree-topping it over me whilst on the footplate on the
SVR. The whole engine was vibrating and I thought I had a major hole in the
fire, then the driver said, and I quote " Bloody Hell!!! Them bomb doors
are open, hope there's nowt in um" . At which point, the pilot virtually
stood the plane on it's back end whilst opening up the lot. What a sound and
sight, a wonderful plane and one of my best days on the footplate. The
driver, Ray Plackett, was bought up as a fireman on Midland compounds at
Bourneville shed in Brum. I don't think I have ever used so little coal and
water and made up so much time, a dammed good engineman.
Dave.

Hi Barrie and All,
Some years ago I knew the Pilot of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight,
Spitfire.
He was grounded and taken off , because a killjoy complained that he flew
too low at an Air Display.
Why the hell did the killjoy go to the display in the first place ?
It used to be fun when I lived in Lincolnshire as every time the Battle of
Britain Flight came anywhere near my house the Spitfire used to peal off and
do our chimney pots a couple of times.
Those were the days. Nothing like a Spitfire screaming around your house at
not many feet above the ground.
Clif.
