I too have been flabbergasted by the price of cylinder castings. I don't buy
them anymore as a result.
Before giving up Phill, have a think about carving your cylinders from solid
cast iron or cored bronze . I've done it for several projects from 3/4" bore
and stroke to 2" bore x 3" stroke with a midsize mill drill and it is not a
big deal. You can start with one big lump of metal or weld / braze / silver
solder several lumps and then machine them. Ports are no trouble if you go
light cuts with the small endmills.
