I can see advantages and disadvantages, with probably more of the latter.

If drivers are being paid, at some point, all the other people who are 
needed to make an event a success will feel that they too should get 
something.
Then it either becomes a commercial event, or fails entirely.

Then there is the insurance and legal aspects.

In my view, it works OK as it is, so leave well alone.
