[modeleng] Hudswell Clarke - update

Since posting the pictures of the Hudswell Clarke locomotive, I have been
doing some digging to find out some more details. I was particularly
looking for pictures of the missing pony trucks and side rod arrangements.

Last week I struck pay dirt! Through Stanley Fish & Co Books, I was put in
touch with a gentleman (Andrew Neale) in Leeds. When I described the
locomotive, 2-6-2, jackshaft drive, mining locomotive, he immediately
exclaimed that is Junin (pronounced Hunin) which was built in the 1930's and
was one of the very early diesel powered locomotives (some years ahead of
the mainline versions). It was 2'6" gauge and was sent to Chile to move
guano across the desert (they had problem with steam locomotives and water
in the desert).

This means that my locomotive is quarter scale! (No wonder it is such a big
beast) It was also interesting to find out that this model is known about
in Hudswell Clarke circles as well. (I'd better do a good job then!)

I was also told that as it was on such historical significance, in the last
few years the locomotive had been brought back to the UK and now resided in
a museum in Leeds.

So, a result!

I am now planning a trip to Leeds in the new year to have a closer look at
the original, and to take some measurements and pictures!

A happy Christmas to one and all.

I finish work today and start with my new employer in 2006.

Oh and I've just bought a 1959 Austin A40 Farina (another project), I must
sort out this speech defect - the inability to say "No!"

Cheers

Peter
