[modeleng] Help on Solenoids

Gentlemen,
I have in mind a project involving the construction of a novelty electric
engine.
This will naturally include solenoids, I am looking for help on the design
of these items.
As I see it I need to start with the power source, say two AA batteries,
that's the amount of space I have allocated. Assuming (for reasonable
battery life) I choose a current of 100mA, from ohms law I know the resistance
of
the wire. From this I can calculate the length of enamelled wire to wind my
coil with. As I have designed the size of the coil bobbin, can anyone
direct me to a formula from which I can predetermine the optimum number of
turns and hence establish the ampere turns?
In fact 'when push comes to shove' I will probably try and get the maximum
number of turns on the bobbin and hope that the resultant force will be
enough to drive my project.
Thanks, by the, way where is everybody?
Ken Jones in very wet Berkshire.
