I'd bash 'em Peter, with a new stainless ball, then use that ball in the
clack.
I think others have suggested rubber balls at different times to fix clack
problems. Just make sure if you buy a rubber ball that it is the right grade
for the temps involved and that it is petroleum compatible. Some rubber,
particularly EPDM, will swell if any oil is present.
