Peter,
It's not the flanges that make the going hard on curves (unless they're
FAR too big), it's the wheelbase. I have some 30' radius curves for my
portable track and my bogie coaches go round that (at low speed) OK, but my
slate wagon with it's longer wheelbase squeals a lot.
Gauge widening is a bit of a black art. I haven't got the 7.25" gauge
society's standards with me at present, but I seem to remember that they
specify a maximum allowance on curves. With narrow gauge profile wheels (at
least 1" thickness), you could go to 1/8" without even noticing it.
From experience at Swanley, the preference is for a bigger radius curve
every time, rather than gauge-widen a sharp one. It's easier to lay, easier
to maintain, and doesn't wear the track and your precious wheels half so
much. We go for a minimum radius of 60' on the main line and aim for much
more. Of course, space comes into play here....
Hope this helps....
Peter

Any chance you could return the treads on the coach with the dodgy wheels,
rather than overwiden the track to suit it (which may not solve the
problem, and might make the situation worse for some of your other stock)?

Rich.
