O.K. Mike, if you need drawings, and Peter hasn't piped up, contact John
Anning, via the S.M.E.E. (he's the bloke holding the drummond archive) on 0207
733 4309 after 1 o'clock. Explain what you need, and that you need to access
the archive, and they (the SMEE) will put you on to him. He'll sort you out.

P.S. Tell John I sent you!

Subject: [drummondlathe] Advice on a knackered BS!
Hi all,
Having been a member of the group for a couple of years I know
someone out there will be able to advise me. Two years ago I bought a
Mk 2 BS from Alf Gapper in quite a sorry state. I uploaded some
photos at the time, see Mike's BS folder. Gradually, as work and
family allow I have been tinkering with it. I cannot find a serial
number stamped anywhere, either on the brass screw cutting plate, or
on the lathe bed.
I attached the very flimsy countershaft arrangement and had the
headstock turning. At this point the first bit of bad news became
apparent when I added a change gear; it had a definite wobble - the
end of the headstock spindle must have had a mighty whack at some
point. Can this be straightened? Does anybody have a spare? Do I need
to develop my rudimentary skills to the level of Mr. Curl and try to
make a replacement? (I am a Design and Technology teacher by trade,
but that doesn't mean I know a great deal about lathe work, you know
the value the government places on training engineers..)
As you would expect, there are a whole series of bodges and neglect
on a lathe this old. For example the back gear seems completely
wrong. I suspect the shaft has been home made (badly!), the larger
gear is a modified change gear and the smaller gear has a long
integral shaft, which means the distance between the back gears is
approximately half an inch greater than the distance between the
gears on the main headstock spindle!
The drive to the leadscrew seems wrong as well. The steel housing for
the bronze dog clutch (through which runs the short shaft with the
change gear) seems to have been replaced with another bodged
fabrication that means the change gear banjo arm does not sit flush
against the headstock casting.
The split nut for screw cutting is bereft of teeth on the upper,
bronze section and I could go on for ages. My aim is to see if anyone
out there has some suitable replacement parts (I keep an eye on
Ebay). I am realistic enough to know that my skills are limited (my
Year 10 class do like making oscillating engines tough!), but I would
like to get it working properly. Any advice, positive or negative is
welcome.
Cheers, Mike Adams.
