THE BULLGUARD NEWSLETTER
Dear develop@xxxxxxxxx - Welcome to a look at the week of security in revie=
w.
The BullGuard Newsletter will keep you informed of the latest trends in=20
computer security, viruses, spam and other web menaces.
Security warning over PDF spam
PDF spam replaces image spam as net threat
PDF spam is set to replace image spam as the scourge of inboxes, according=
=20
to security experts. They say image spam is finally on the decline, but a=
=20
new threat that uses an attached PDF file to trick recipients into buying=
=20
stock in a company is emerging.
Paul Henry, vice president of technology evangelism with Secure Computing,=
=20
said security vendors had succeeded in countering the threat of image spam=
=20
by tweaking their security software to block it. Image spam has long tricke=
d=20
filters because the message's text is embedded in an image found in an=20
email's body, and filters until recently couldn't decipher images.

If you submit the information anyway, the scammer will be able to access=20
your account and you are vulnerable to identity theft. Your money may be=20
transferred away into the criminal's account or used to make online=20
purchases.
A couple of years back phishers mostly targeted big American financial=20
institutions, but nowadays phishing attacks have spread to other countries=
=20
and languages as well and also target smaller companies. Swedish bank Norde=
a=20
has suffered one of the biggest publicly known phishing frauds in history.=
=20
Over 8 million kronor ($1,200,000) disappeared in three months as a result=
=20
of a tailor-made attack launched by Russian criminals. Reports indicated=20
that 250 customers had become victims.
PDF spam is beginning to take image spam=EF=BF=BDs place. The new threat co=
mes from=20
spammers sending an email message with a PDF attached - which most spam=20
filters can't read - that attempts to convince the recipient to purchase=20
stocks.
So far, PDF spam isn't approaching the volumes that image spam has enjoyed =
-=20
Secure Computing's Henry says in early July it accounted for about 4 percen=
t=20
of all spam sent - yet this new spam trick could prove to be significantly=
=20
more malicious.
PDF spam does hold some potential for spammers who are advanced enough to=
=20
take advantage of the technology, some say.
"Simply attaching a PDF to an email and randomising the size and name of th=
e=20
title, to me, does not seem all that impressive, but it seems to be=20
working," says Kyle Ohme, director of technology with W3i.com, an=20
interactive marketing services provider.
"The battle between spammers and spam-filter vendors will always be a game=
=20
of cat and mouse. The tools are definitely getting smarter ... the better=
=20
the tools the more creative spammers will be," says Sharon Finney,=20
information security administrator with Dekalb Medical Center. "I am seeing=
=20
some increases in PDF spam, but no real volume yet. All spam is a nuisance=
=20
regardless of the technology behind it. I don't think that any one type of=
=20
spam is more of a nuisance than any other."
The BullGuard Spamfilter protects
The BullGuard Spamfilter is effective at detecting spam attempts. Every=20
email is analysed in a number of ways to determine whether the email is=20
genuine, spam or a phishing attempt. In addition, the BullGuard Spamfilter=
