Tony
The reason for my comments are as follows. Some years ago I attempted =
to
braze some crossheads together, after ten pairs had failed I realised =
the
material contained lead. The same thing hapenend more recently when I
attempted to braze some hornblocks together. When completed the brazed
joint looks okay but does not have much mechanical strength and soon =
fall
apart.
Don't know why this is but would like to find out.
So frustrating is this problem that I now when come across material that
will take silver solder that I mark it 'Braze friendly or BF'

An interesting comment IP! Lead is in ordinary solder and silver is =
often=20
found in lead ore (with lead being a by product of the silver refining), =
so=20
I would have thought that silver soldering material with traces of lead=20
would not present any problems. I also thought that free machining EN1A=20
steel only contained minute traces of lead, "just enough" as it were, =
but=20
would these be enough to cause it all not to work please? My reason for=20
asking these questions is that I was going to silver solder some t/c =
tips on
to free machining steel tools, for my wood turning.
Tony.
