Don, I have access to a small glass bead blaster and I throughly "frost" any
metal parts with it before painting. I use no primer, but apply my paint
straight from the aerosol can, usually putting on two coats after waiting
until the first coat is basically dry to the touch. I handle the bead
blasted parts with cotton gloves or by holding onto places where the paint
will not be applied since oil from your skin will cause poor adhesion. This
procedure has always worked for me with every metal from brass and aluminium
to iron and steel.
