As everyone has said, chalk is the best solution.
However, I was reading about powdered molybdenum disulfide and was wondering if
that might be worth trying on a file.

A couple of other points. It is worth keeping the newest files for brass/copper
etc, and then relegating them to steel once they wear a bit.
Once used on steel /iron, they never cut "yellow metal" as well.
Some time ago I bought a set of Edge Craft diamond files. These are the bees
knees (whatever they might be) for sharpeneing anything and having used them as
general purpose files, are ideal for that too.
The set of three "blades" coarse, medium & fine, plus the handle are ofen seen
at the major exhibitions.
