Alan,

I've tried both the single pack and two pack etch primers from Phoenix. The 
single pack is like milk and is tricky to spray. It is good on steel but not 
so good on brass. The two pack has more body to it and seems to do the job 
on both steel and brass.

I recently asked a couple of guys who produce excellent paint jobs on 5" 
gauge models what they used and they replied that they simply used car 
aerosol sprays. I've since tried Halfords and it seems O.K.
