[modeleng] Etch primer

What recent experience has everyone (anyone?) had of etch primers?

I need to think about painting my Jubilee, and that obviously requires paint 
on brass and steel.
What I used to use was superb on brass, but hopeless on non-ferrous metals.

I would like to find something that is OK on both, sticks to the metal like 
the proverbial, and isnt too thick, so doesnt hide rivet detail.
I know there are two-pack ones, but dont want to go that route unless there 
are clear benefits.

Suggestions anyone?
