Leaving Emeryville (Oakland) the bus immediately crosses the Bay Bridge and
first calls at the Ferry Building, on the Embarcadero, where the Amtrak
office is. This is a great area now, after the earthquake damage caused the
overhead expressway to be demolished. The Ferry Building has been
refurbished with a good range of food shops, and an outdoor market on
Saturdays. You can take interesting round-trip ferry rides from here to
Sausalito and Larkspur for next to nothing, and a free transfer on the
streetcar/bus back to your hotel afterwards. As good as and much cheaper
than riding the Bay tour boats. The streetcars (trams) running along Market
Street and the Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf are preserved items in their
original liveries, from several US cities, and one example from Milan.
Streetcar fare for seniors was also astoundingly low at 75c.
After calling at the Amtrak Office the bus tours San Francisco dropping you
off at various major hotel areas, and Union Square.
It's not an unpleasant 30-45 mins, as you see San Francisco from a distance
while crossing the huge Bay Bridge. We noted last October that they are
building a second bridge alongside, and recently saw details on one of those
"Civil Engineering Wonders" TV programmes.
Enjoy San Francisco......it's one of our favourite towns.......an
interesting tram/trolley museum downtown also.
